Remember the dog from the movie UP? More to the point, remember his habit of distraction? SQUIRREL!! These days I am in full acknowledgement of how I relate to that habit and as the science goes, the only way to change a habit is to replace it.
From the variety of technical devices that keep me feeling constantly pulled in one direction or another, to the very loud world I live in, there are so many “squirrel” moments each day. Social Media alone is like a herd of squirrels stealing my ability to focus, think critically and see the big picture. Life is not lived in soundbites. Understanding any issue happens when I look at the entirety of a situation, not the 140-character distraction.
So while I’ll keep Social Media as part of my engagement with the world, I will not let it rob me of my investment in this world. Actively participating where I can and putting action behind my clicks is what matters. Too many people feel like if they comment, share, like, etc. that something has been accomplished and they can move on with life. Guilty. I have repeatedly been that person. No more.
The wonder of this world is how big and diverse and smart and complicated and beautiful and filled with joy and overflowing with grief and…..SQUIRREL!
Here’s to diving deeper and paying closer attention to the matters of the day and leaving a mark on this world that makes it better. My mother always taught me to leave a place better than how I found it, may that be true for this life of mine and this world I call home.
